Peshtigo first responders navigated across the thin, cracked terrain of the iced over river to rescue Calvin, the Australian shepherd.
It seems Calvin had been a bit overzealous and tried to chase some geese who were on the ice in the middle of the river.
According to WRAL, Calvin fell through and ended up more than 200 feet from shore in the freezing waters.
Some observant passersby called 9-1-1.
Firefighters tried to reach Calvin, but the ice was too thin to hold them.
The town of Peshtigo Fire Department quickly brought an inflatable rescue boat capable of gliding over ice.
Two firefighters jumped on board, grabbed some paddles and started breaking the ice.
When they reached Calvin, they wrapped him in a warm blanket before his owners rushed him to the vet.
He is said to be making a speedy recovery.
